Family Caregiver Education and Empowerment Program Launched!

FREE first-ever Indiana Long Term Care Resource CD filled with information offered

(March 2008) USA announces the launch of United Senior Action's Family Caregiver Education and Empowerment Program. The program aims at helping prospective residents and family caregivers prepare for the time when either they or a loved one can no longer stay at home.

As one ages, he or she may need assistance from family caregivers—members of the family who provide whatever help they can. At times, care giving involves making difficult decisions, including the decision to place a loved one in a long-term care facility when staying at home is no longer possible. These decisions are stressful, but can be made easier with education and support.

The program's director, Robyn Grant, who holds a Master's degree in Social Work, is the former Indiana Long Term Care Ombudsman (the top nursing home advocate in the state), and is United Senior Action's Long Term Care Policy Director. Folks who have attended any of Grant's former seminars or group presentations could tell you how much they value the experience.

Two FREE seminars are scheduled:

Assisting You With Assisted Living will be held Saturday, May 3, 2008, from 9:00 to 11:00 am, with registration at 8:30am in Indianapolis at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street. This workshop will cover how to navigate your way through the assisted living maze in Indiana and select the residence that is right for you or a loved one.

Yes, You Can! Ten Tips for Getting Good Nursing Home Care, will be conducted as an hour long teleconference Tuesday, June 10, 2008, starting at 7:00pm. Teleconferences work out fantastically for many, since you can learn while sitting in your own home!

To participate in either (or both) events just call United Senior Action at 317-634-0871, or outside Indianapolis 800-495-0872.

The program also consists of group presentations designed to educate current or potential family caregivers and other consumers about assisted living and nursing home options, selection and care. The length of the session can be adjusted to meet the needs of the group. Topics include: Options When a Loved One Can't Stay at Home, Assisting you with Assisted Living, Ten Tips for Getting
Nursing Home Care, Residents' Rights, Promoting Quality Care, and Problem Solving. In addition to these above, we can tailor the subject to your group's interest. If any of those valuable topics could be brought to a group you belong to, please call or email USA.

As an added bonus, all attendees of the seminars and group presentations will receive FREE the first-ever Indiana Long Term Care Resource CD filled with information for no matter where you are in you care journey. A link will be provided to our website where the information contained on the CD will be regularly updated.
